Tofu topic

One of the simplest pleasures in life is to put a pot of rice to boil, lay on some silken tofu when rice is half cooked and mix in some soy sauce, pepper and sesame oil before serving. The silkiness of the tofu is complemented by the springiness of the jasmine rice; their somewhat muted flavours are amplified by the saltiness of the soy sauce; and the pepper and sesame oil add mild spice and fragrance value to the overall dish. This is possibly the simplest example where  all the ingredients work in unison to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts!

Anyway I had a craving for tofu the other day but just could not bring myself to walk 40 mins to the chinese supermarket so I did the next best thing. I went to Sainsbury’s to try my luck in their ‘world foods‘ section. I swore I bought some dragon fountain brand tofu from them before! Unfortunately no luck, but the shop assistant brought me to the ‘ready meals’ section where I found this, next to the mock meats and instant falafels:

For 5 times the price that a made-in-singapore block would have cost!

ANYWAY, tried this, and I really have to say, the makers of this block really just DON’T GET IT. Never again.

Today in the library I glanced up and saw a guy wearing a shirt that said “Pepperoni”.

Pepperoni? I looked up again and it was actually “Peroni, Italy”.

I liked Pepperoni better.

Mezza for 3

Yay for yummy middle-eastern takeout!

This is due reward for a hard week’s worth of work! We were too exhausted to cook- the night before, me and S stayed up till 4 and 5 a.m. respectively cramming work- but it was worth it because on friday I totally aced my international finance tutorial and I just sent in my polished essay on the impending sterling crisis, a whole 8 hours ahead of the deadline! Yay! “Figurative pat on the back”!

Our meals are always balanced with veg and egg

It’s so difficult to find coconut milk here, so we usually substitute for it with regular milk. The result is pretty similar- its mostly for the consistency anyway. Knowing that I’m lactose-intolerant, my flatmates were kind enough to check- “Won’t die right?” Hahahaha no won’t.

What a stunning city! I love Edinburgh!! Besides the beautiful architecture and scenic mountain-scapes, it is cultured, clean, civilised, peaceful and people are so friendly! We could walk the streets at midnight feeling completely safe and not having to avoid puddles of sick from drunken revellers- how’s that for a change! I went there to visit my friend C, and we spent the entire weekend hopping from restaurant to restaurant, just catchin’ up and chillin’ out.

Here are some of the things we did:

Dinner by me!

I invited N over for dinner before Lady Hendrick’s cocktail party!

Roasted starchy vegetables- to line the stomach

Lamb chops! Best eaten with mustard (:

It was a good thing too- I got light headed just after 2 drinks- a sex on the beach, and a mojito made with gin.

Meatball

This was a damnnn good meatball! All credit goes to my two housemates for making them from scratch. I could smell this coming up the stairs. So freaking awesome.

The best thing about baking your own muffins/cakes/bread is that you can control exactly what goes into it. i.e. Extra raspberries, less sugar, skimmed milk, and absolutely NO vegetable oil or preservatives. Only pure, unsalted english butter… hahahahahahahaha
